Rory MacDonald joins B.J. Penn in VADA drug testing for UFC 152 showdown

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

MMATorchAvatar2011V2_180_119.jpg
Sticking by his word, UFC welterweight Rory MacDonald will join his UFC 152 opponent B.J. Penn in undergoing random drug testing by the Volunteer Anti-Doping Association ahead of their bout.

VADA announced Penn's participation on Thursday, and in an interview with MMAJunkie.com, MacDonald's manager, Lex McMahon, revealed they were doing the same. Both fighters will be subject to random blood and urine tests for eight weeks leading into their bout, in addition to any testing done by the UFC.

"Our camp is very happy that B.J. has decided to participate in the VADA program that he had put forward," McMahon said. "Rory's completing his paperwork and will be joining him soon, and I think that Rory is definitely excited about the possibilities of what this means for the sport in the big picture, and he's happy he can play a small role in this."

Penn initially balked at VADA's need to release results of the tests immediately, wanting to withhold results until after the fight so as not to affect their booking at UFC 152. That's not how the system works, however, and Penn eventually decided to go ahead with the program as it is. Results of any of the random tests during that time period will be immediately revealed to the ABC, Ontario governing body, and the UFC.

Penick's Analysis: MacDonald and Penn are taking a step in a new direction for testing in the sport. It will be interesting to see how many follow suit and whether or not VADA testing starts to gain a foothold in the sport. It's already resulted in some high-profile busts in boxing, and any fighter signing up for it claiming they're clean better be sure they are, or it's going to lead to the same happening in MMA. Still, as the problems surrounding drug use and abuse in MMA continue to grow, a new approach is needed. VADA being the answer or not is still too early to tell, but it's something more comprehensive than what we're seeing from Athletic commissions with simple pre and post fight urine tests.

Dana White: UFC's Alexander Gustafsson on deck for 'big fight'

It'd be easy to consider Alexander Gustafsson the odd man out.

Especially after UFC president Dana White today surprisingly confirmed the winner of Saturday's UFC on FOX 4 headliner between Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and Brandon Vera is next in line for a light-heavyweight title shot.

But that doesn't mean Gustafsson is the forgotten contender of the division.

Invicta FC, Sara McMann and Women?s MMA: The Morning News Roundup ? 7.29.12

A weekend without the UFC, Strikeforce or Bellator can often mean a weekend without happiness. Okay, not really. But if that actually is the case with you, please, get help. Or get a hobby or something. Anyway, there were no offerings from the aforementioned titans of mixed martial arts; however, last night the Invicta Fighting Championships had its second installment, and in terms of high-level MMA action, it pretty much rocked. Therein lies where this morning's news is coming from.

  • Unless you were one of the lucky few to make the trek out to Kansas City to see the event in person, you were forced to watch Invicta FC via the free stream broadcast over the organization's website. You were also forced to deal with a stream that was virtually non-existent for the first half of the fourteen-bout card, which, according to the event promoter Shannon Knapp, was attributed to crashed servers. But hey, it was free, and when the feed was strong, we got to see some exciting stuff, like Strikeforce veterans Amanda Nunes and Liz Carmouche kick butt and take names. Reviews of the event can be found here, here and here. Personally, I rated it four out of five mouthpieces.

  • Olympic Freestyle wrestling Silver Medalist Sara McMann came away with another win in Invicta FC's thrilling main event, bringing her unblemished record up to 6-0 with a unanimous decision win over the ultra-tough Shayna Baszler. The bout was a close one and hotly contested right up to the final bell; in the waning seconds, Baszler rocked McMann with strikes, and McMann was moments away from doing "the Worm". But the bell rang and it went to the judges, and that was all she wrote. The victory puts McMann in line for a shot at the Invicta FC bantamweight title, which is vacant and waiting for someone worthy to claim it.

  • With over 200,000 purported Internet viewers, the first Invicta FC event was considered a success, and last night's numbers have to at least be in that ballpark. So where does that put the current state of female MMA? Probably in a very good place, especially with Strikeforce champ Ronda Rousey's step up in exposure and Invicta FC already planning a third event. Say what you will about women fighting, but there's a market for it ? and right now, that market is strong.

  • Yesterday was UFC president Dana White's birthday. I hope that in honor of the occasion you all cornered your pets and screamed at them "Do you want to be a [expletive] fighter?" I know I did.

Jim Genia tweets the darndest things.

With both the American and British/Australian editions of "The Ultimate Fighter" airing soon, the UFC announced the coaches, and eventual fight pairings, for "The Ultimate Fighter 16" and "The Ultimate Fighter: Smashes."

USA Today reports Roy Nelson and Shane Carwin will coach the show in the U.S., and face off at the show's finale.

"This is going to be a very interesting dynamic between these two heavyweights," UFC president Dana White said. "They both have huge punching power and great chins, but outside of the octagon, they couldn't be any more different."

TUF 16 will air on FX starting in September, and the live finale will be in December. The UFC is returning to a taped season after the 15th season, which showed live fights, failed to give the long-running reality show a much-needed shot in the arm.

Meanwhile, on the new edition of the show, Ross Pearson will coach Team U.K. and George Sotiropoulos the Aussies. The show, named "Smashes" after a cricket rivalry, will air on FX in Australia.

Daniel Cormier excited for Frank Mir fight as his introduction to UFC fans

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Daniel_Cormier_180_8.jpg
The news that Frank Mir will head to Strikeforce this fall for a bout against Daniel Cormier took a lot of people by surprise on Wednesday night. That includes Cormier, who was under the impression he was facing a different former UFC Heavyweight Champion in Tim Sylvia on Sept. 29.

"I was excited, man. I couldn't have imagined getting such a huge-name guy and fighting a guy that just fought for the UFC championship only a few months ago," Cormier said in an interview with BleacherReport.com. "I didn't know what to do with myself. I was dropping my cell phone."

"Not to disrespect Tim Sylvia, but he hasn't really been fighting at the top of the sport for the last few years. He's been fighting wherever he can. I think the last top-level guy he fought was Fedor, and he got beat really quick. So it's exciting to fight a guy that's been fighting at the top of the sport for his whole career, a guy who just fought for the title and was coming off three or four straight wins in the UFC before that. It's a great fight."

Mir was stopped in his last fight, losing his title bid against Junior dos Santos at UFC 146 to snap a three fight winning streak. It marked his third straight loss in title fights, as he was knocked out by Shane Carwin in an Interim Title bout and before that by Brock Lesnar in a unification bout at UFC 100.

With little in the way of intrigue for Mir in the UFC's heavyweight division, this marks a decidedly more interesting fight than what he could have taken there. Still, regardless of his reasoning for coming over, Cormier's just excited for the chance to end his Strikeforce run on a high note, as well as to introduce himself in a big way to the UFC's audience.

"Frank is a guy who has been a champion twice. His name rings a bell," Cormier said. "It's synonymous with the UFC. So UFC fans will actually come over to watch Frank fight, and he'll get a lot of eyes on me. And regardless of the outcome, more people will see me and know me as I move into the UFC than before I fought Frank, or if I'd faced someone else in my last Strikeforce fight."

Penick's Analysis: I don't expect this to start a trend of guys heading over to Strikeforce for fights from the UFC, but kudos to the UFC - and Mir himself - for making this matchup. A Cormier-Sylvia bout made sense from the perspective that Cormier had no other opponents to face from outside of the UFC; but getting someone to come over - especially someone on Mir's level of recognition and status in the division - is fantastic. If Cormier defeats Mir, he could legitimately enter the UFC with a title shot. He may have to win once in the Octagon to firm that up, but as the Heavyweight World Grand Prix winner, adding a win over the last challenger to the title would be huge.

This is a man with the nickname "Useless," so some walkout song hate will not bother him. Justin Bieber has attended UFC shows in the past, so maybe Bieber will be at this show. ROUNDTABLE: If Chris Weidman fights Anderson Silva next, who has the best case as next No. 1 contender with a Fall win?

BispingMichael_180_31.jpg
If Chris Weidman gets the next shot at Anderson Silva, who has the best case for a title shot after that with a win this fall?

RICH HANSEN, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

It depends on what fights they make. It looks like they're going to make Alan Belcher vs. Vitor Belfort (advantage Belcher) in Rio (um, never mind, advantage Belfort), and we already know that Michael Bisping will be decisioning Brian Stann in September. I think the way this plays out is that Belfort and Bisping will wind up being the co-main event behind Silva vs. Weidman on Super bowl Weekend, with the winner facing Silva (or Weidman) in the summer of 2013.

FRANK HYDEN, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

I don't think there is a "best case," but you could probably make a good argument for a lot of guys. I think if Michael Bisping were to beat Brian Stann in an impressive manner, that would be a good way to go. You give Bisping his title shot and let him do the hyping for the fight. Unless someone comes out of left field, that's probably your best shot for an exciting fight.

ANWAR PEREZ, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

The easiest and most decisivie person would be Michael Bisping, if not a newcomer to the division in Rashad Evans. Bisping would get it before Evans with a win over Brian Stann, but Evans could get one notch under him and then move immediately into a title fight with Silva. I still think Bisping will get it next, but if Evans does drop, don't be surprised to see Evans scoot in front of Bisping.

ERIC HOBAUGH, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

This is a very hard question, because Anderson Silva has beaten so many of the top fighters at 185. If you look at the top ten middleweights right now, Vitor Belfort, Tim Boetsch, and Michael Bisbing are the only sensible names. From that small list, Michael Bisping may have the best possibility of a sellable fight for the UFC. If Bisbing gets past Brian Stann, he might get a title shot. We can never forget it is not always about who is most deserving of the fight, but who can sell the most pay-per-views.

BRAD WALKER, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

If Weidman does in fact receive the next shot against Anderson Silva, the people with the best cases are Michael Bisping or Brian Stann by a long shot. It's very easy to say here you go Weidman, do what you can against the Spider, but there's no guarantee thats the fight they will chose to put together either. 185 does not have a lot of solid contenders left since Silva has already beaten most of them, but how everything unfolds should tell us the way UFC sees the lay of the land, and it will be an interesting year for the whole weight class.

JASON AMADI, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

In MMA, there are guys who need to win more fights than others to stand out. Alan Belcher is one of those guys, Brian Stann (because of how he was dominated by Chael Sonnen) is one of those guys and Tim Boetsch is one of those guys.

Vitor Belfort and Michael Bisping can both be fast tracked to a title shot with one win over a good name, and I think Bisping gets the nod just because people would love to see him get beat up by Anderson Silva. Belfort was already devastated by Anderson in a fashion so spectacular that there's no reason for a rematch to be put together anytime soon.

Vinny Magalhaes signs with the UFC, facing Igor Pokrajac in September

Ultimate Fighter 8 finalist Vinny Magalhaes has inked a deal to return to the Octagon after a few years away to polish his game, getting away from his label as a one-dimensional submission specialist and changing it to that of a competitor notching a pair of strike-based stoppages in two of his last three tilts. UFC 148: Which preliminary fights stand out?

With a title fight, and the retirement of an MMA legend, most of the focus for UFC 148 has (understandably) been focused on the top of the card. But let's take a look down the card a bit at the best of the preliminary fights, and see if its worth coming in early from a BBQ to see the bout, or if you can catch it later on your DVR.

PRELIMINARY CARD (FX)

Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Gleison Tibau (pictured): You're going to want to tune in just to see cage announcer Bruce Buffer get through the name Khabib Nurmagomedov. Beyond that, Nurmy (as he heretofore will be called) is 17-0 with just four decisions to his name. Verdict: Watch the fight live.

Fabricio Camoes vs. Melvin Guillard: Is there ever a time you've regretted watching a Melvin Guillard fight? Even when he loses, he does it spectacularly. His last four fights have been two first-round losses, preceded by two first-round wins. Leave the BBQ.

Riki Fukuda vs. Constantinos Philippou: Though Phillippou's beating heart tattoo is a good reason to tune in, the not-so-thrilling decisions from both fighters' pasts is a reason to stay outside. Verdict: DVR it.

[Related: Watch UFC 148 live on Yahoo! Sports]

John Alessio vs. Shane Roller: There is huge motivation for Roller to win, as he has lost his past three fights. Alessio is coming in off a loss, too. However, Roller is known to use his wrestling to control bouts, something some MMA fans find boring. Verdict: If you're a wrestling geek like me, watch it live. If not, DVR it.

PRELIMINARY CARD (Facebook)

Yoislandy Izquierdo vs. Rafaello Oliveira: Oliveira has two losses in a row, and lost his last bout. Both men need a win to stay off the UFC's cut list, and Izquiredo is capable of some serious TKOs. Verdict: Bring your laptop to the BBQ and gather around it to watch the fights while enjoying some ribs.

Which of these fights are you most looking forward to? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

UFC 149 Bonuses: Matt Riddle, Ryan Jimmo, Bryan Caraway, and Mitch Gagnon earn extra $65,000

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Four fighters earned $65,000 more for their efforts at UFC 149, as Matt Riddle, Ryan Jimmo, Bryan Caraway, and Mitch Gagnon all took home "Fight Night" bonuses.

Riddle took the "Submission of the Night" with an excellent arm triangle choke that he set up standing before tripping Chris Clements to the mat to finish it off. "Knockout of the Night" went to Jimmo, who tied the UFC record for fastest knockout with a one punch finish of Anthony Perosh in seven seconds.

Caraway and Gagnon earned "Fight of the Night" honors for their scrap on FX, which ended in the third round when Caraway secured a rear naked choke for the submission.

Chael Sonnen: ?I?m in this purely for the championship.?

With a second consecutive loss to UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva it seems Chael Sonnen will have to wait for some time before earning a third shot at the divisional belt while fresh contenders emerge. Officiating issues among UFC 149 woes for president Dana White

UFC 149 may wind up being a pay-per-view Dana White would just as soon forget about.

The card was a steady stream of injury changes almost from the moment it was announced, causing some mild upheaval from fans. And when the event rolled around on Saturday, even the UFC boss had to admit the main card didn't live up to the billing that had been promised.

But it all may have been a little easier to swallow if White's old nemesis - officiating issues -hadn't cropped up again to add to his woes.

Urijah Faber?s rib was broken early in loss to Renan Barao (PHOTO)

Urijah Faber lost in his second shot at a UFC title at UFC 149 in Calgary on Saturday night, and walked away with the extra bonus of a broken rib. He said a knee from Renan Barao broke it in the first round, and tweeted his X-ray.

Faber has experience with gutting his way through a fight with an injury. He injured both his hands early in a loss to Mike Brown in 2009, and finished the five-round fight.

Though the bout wasn't a thriller, it was hardly worth the boos the crowd sent Faber and Barao's way. After the not great bout between James Head and Brian Ebersole, the boring bout between Cheick Kongo and Shawn Jordan, and the bizarre snooze fest between Tim Boetsch and Hector Lombard, only a fight stoppage would do.

They must have forgotten Faber is hard to finish. He can ignore injuries, and hasn't lost by a stoppage since he was TKOed by Brown in November of 2008.

Those tuning in last night to watch the first preliminary fight for UFC 149 no doubt took note of the animated Calgary crowd who was a raucous bunch from the opening bell on.
