New coach validated by Sonnen's submission win, NSAC mum on licensing prospects

It was a proud moment for Scott McQuary when Chael Sonnen cinched an arm-triangle choke that forced Brian Stann to tap out.

McQuary, who joined forces with Sonnen three months prior as a jiu-jitsu and muay Thai coach, said the submission was one of a handful drilled into the fighter over the course of training camp.

"I saw it as an opportunity - because in all of Chael's fights previously, he was always in those positions," McQuary told MMAjunkie.com.

HOUSTON - Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez attended this weekend's UFC Fan Expo Houston 2011 representing his longtime employer, but he hopes to leave the city with a different tag: UFC title challenger.

Melendez today said he plans on pressing UFC president Dana White for the next crack at the winner of UFC 136's lightweight championship bout.

"I'm a vet in this sport," Melendez told MMAjunkie.com. "I've been here for a long, long time, and I'm ready to prove I'm No. 1."

Frankie Edgar bloodies camera with celebration kiss at UFC 136

Frankie Edgar bloodies camera with celebration kiss at UFC 136

Frankie Edgar was understandably excited when he TKOed Gray Maynard to defend the UFC lightweight belt. To celebrate, the 5-foot-6 fighter jumped onto the six-foot fence of the Octagon, grabbed a camera and gave it a big kiss. As his face had been bloodied early when Maynard had Edgar on his heels in the first round, Edgar left a bloody mess behind him.

MMA has its own charms that makes it different from any other sport. One of them is that its fans can see the beauty behind blood drops on a camera.
