Dan Henderson, Mauricio Rua facing potential six-month medical suspensions

It appears participating in a five-round war considered by many to be one of the best fights in the history of MMA comes with a steep price-tag as Dan Henderson and Mauricio Rua learned this week on the heels of their epic encounter at UFC 139. Miguel Torres video: Can a smarter fighter be a player in the 135-pound title hunt?

Miguel Torres was as exciting as they came. His go-for-broke style helped him roll up a 37-1 record and move as high as No. 4 on the pound-for-pound list back in early 2009.

His banging style eventually cost him and he ran into a couple of knockout punches. Now he's re-worked his game to essentially become a points fighter. Do you like it? Torres does.

"I fought my last fight against Demetriuous Johnson, he got the decosion and he ended getting the title shot. So a fight against me can make or break somebody," Torres told Cagewriter. "and I understand. I want to go out there and be very aggressive, finishing fights, but I have to be careful also."

Working with Georges St-Pierre's trainer Firas Zihabi, Torres is now working behind his jab and scoring points. Sound familiar? Will this get Torres an eventual title shot? Standing with less fighters like Nick Pace could also get him caught.

Without explosive wins, Torres (40-4, 2-1 UFC) is now stuck in the middle of the pack from No. 5-15 at bantamweight. Will he get a rematch against Joe Benavidez next or should the UFC throw him someone like Brad Pickett, Scott Jorgensen or Renan Barao?

Watch Junior dos Santos return to Brazil after winning belt

If you wondered why the UFC was so eager to return to Brazil, just months after their jam-packed UFC 134 event, watch this video of Junior dos Santos returning home to Brazil after winning the heavyweight championship. You don't have to watch the whole thing to get the idea -- especially if you get seasick -- but catch the last 20 seconds to see "Cigano" celebrate atop a firetruck.

Who wouldn't want to be greeted by a brass band, hordes of cheering fans, media, cameras and a firetruck? That sort of passion for dos Santos speaks both to the love of MMA in Brazil and to his popularity.

Thanks to Ariel Helwani.

WWE SmackDown! Taping Draws 1,600 Paying Customers

Last Tuesday’s SmackDown! taping in Toledo, Ohio was one of the worst attended WWE events in years as it drew 3,200 fans, with only 1,600 paid.
Following the event’s poor advance, WWE only sold tickets facing the camera so the Huntington Center would appear full on television. SLAM! Wrestling columnist Matt Bishop, who attended the event, described the venue’s appearance: “Tuesday’s tapings of WWE Smackdown, Superstars and NXT wasn’t notable because of what happened in the ring, but rather because of what was happening outside the ringside area. Or more appropriately, ...

UFC all-timer: Henderson wins 25-minute classic against Rua at UFC 139

UFC all-timer: Henderson wins 25-minute classic against Rua at UFC 139

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Dan Henderson has put on some amazing shows over the years, but Saturday night may have been his best.

In a all-time classic fight, Henderson stumbled to the finish line, but he did so much heavy damage over the first three rounds that he earned a unanimous decision victory, 48-47 on all scorecards, over Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in the main event of UFC 139 at the HP Pavilion.

During the post-fight interview in the Octagon, UFC analyst Joe Rogan said the bout was one of the greatest MMA fights in history. UFC president said it was one of the top three fights he'd ever seen. It just might have been.

UFC all-timer: Henderson wins 25-minute classic against Rua at UFC 139"I hit him on hard. Cut him a few times. I should've had him finished there, but the gas tank got me. He stayed in there with a great heart like a champion should," Henderson, who was being held up by one of his cornerman, told Rogan.

Both fighters escaped terrible predicaments and landed shots that would've finish most opponents at light heavyweight. They both held on and survived in those situations.

It was a tale of two fights. Henderson (29-8, 6-3 UFC) had Rua in trouble in each of the first three rounds. His jackhammer right hands nearly closed Rua's left eye after just 15 minutes. Henderson outlanded Rua 106-66 over the first three.

"That guy can take an [expletive] punch. I hit him hard tonight. I tried to finish him the first three rounds," said Henderson.

UFC all-timer: Henderson wins 25-minute classic against Rua at UFC 139

That's when the championship rounds arrived. Earlier this year, the UFC decided to make all main events, title and non-title fights, five rounds.

Henderson, 41, spent so much energy trying to pound out Rua that he was exhausted in the fourth and fifth. Rua almost took him out in the fourth. Henderson stumbled around the cage over the final 90 seconds of the round with his hands down by his sides.

In the fifth, Rua scored a takedown with 4:25 left in the fight and Henderson never got back up. Rua mounted Henderson several times. He outlanded Henderson 84-19 down the stretch.

Cagewriter scored the final round 10-8 for Rua, but none of the judges did. If they had, their scores would have matched the 47-47 we had as the final outcome.

The fight opened on a blistering pace. Henderson dropped Rua with a punch just over two minutes in. That was the first sign of a cut next to Rua's left eye. He bounced back in the final 80 seconds by bouncing a right off the top of Henderson's head that dropped the old guy.

Henderson pressed the attack in the second. Both fighters landed good shots, but Henderson produced the heavier blows.

Rua (20-6, 4-4 UFC) came out for the third with his eye slowly closing. Henderson put together a brilliant inside leg kick-right hand combination that dropped Rua again with 3:23 left in the round. Henderson went ballistic with elbows and punches on top of the Brazilian. Rua rolled to his side to cover up and the fight was seconds away from being stopped by referee Josh Rosenthal. He didn't step in and it was absolutely the correct decision.

Rua actually mounted a bit of a comeback in the final 33 seconds as he hurt a weary Henderson with a nice combination. Henderson said afterwards he thought he'd jumped out to a safe lead.

"I knew I had the first three rounds easily. I thought I even had one of the rounds 10-8," said Henderson.

Both fighters came out for the fourth taking deep breaths. Rua scored two momentary takedowns and Henderson drove through a big double leg takedown of his own with 3:46 left. With just over two minutes left, Henderson actually dropped his hands from sheer exhaustion. That's when Rua landed his best punch of the fight, a brutal uppercut that put Henderson on rubber legs. The veteran was out on his feet, he stumbled backwards and ate several more big shots.

UFC all-timer: Henderson wins 25-minute classic against Rua at UFC 139

Rua could've pushed Henderson to the ground without much resistance, but he was simply too tired to press forward over the next 45 seconds. He scored a takedown with 36 seconds left, mounted Henderson and took his back, but ran out of time as he looked for a choke.

The fifth round was an absolute whitewash for Rua. He took Henderson down 35 seconds into the round, mounted him three times and attempted a total of 97 strikes.

According to FightMetric, Rua outlanded Henderson 79-8 in the final round. For the entire fight, Rua outlanded Henderson 191-113. He also made good on 5-of-10 takedowns.

"I was confident before the decision was announced. I would have been very surprised if that decision did not go my way. If I didn't think I had the fight won, I would have tried to get on my feet that last round. He did do a good job of staying on top. He tucked his head in nice," said Henderson.

Henderson said his next fight should be for the UFC title.
"I want the 205-pound title and think I should be next in line for a shot."

White said Henderson is a candidate for a title shot at both middleweight and light heavyweight. He won't force Henderson into one or the other. It'll be up to the fighter and what opportunity presents itself first.

UFC 139 domination: Faber fabulous in earning another shot against Cruz

UFC 139 domination: Faber fabulous in earning another shot against Cruz

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Urijah Faber was tired of hearing he didn't deserve an immediate rematch against Dominick Cruz for his UFC bantamweight title, so he took matters into his own hands and laid some lumber on Brian Bowles.

Faber crushed Bowles with an uppercut in the second. The Georgia native was stunned and eventually found himself on his back after Faber nailed him with a knee in close quarters. Faber went into overdrive on the ground. Bowles couldn't fend him off. Faber eventually got control of Bowles' head and locked him on a mean guillotine choke to get the submission victory at 1:27 of the second round at UFC 139 in the HP Pavilion.

[Related: Dan Henderson tops 'Shogun' in epic all-time battle]

Just seconds after the fight was finished, Faber (26-5, 2-1 UFC) immediately turned his attention to his nemesis Cruz.

"Dominick, you can run but you can't hide. Throw some gel in that widow's peak and let's do some work. Let's battle," Faber said.

Faber and Cruz brawled for five hard rounds at UFC 132. Cruz won via unanimous decision, but Faber believes the judges blew it. Before Saturday's fight, he admitted he needs to play to the judges more to get a win against Cruz, who is a whirling dervish that wins over MMA judges with his high-volume style.

Tonight, Faber showed some stones trading shots with the heavy-handed Bowles throughout the first. Bowles' lone path to victory was probably landing a big right hand. Faber's movement, fakes and speed threw Bowles off. He wasn't aggressive.

In the second, Faber took advantage of a very flat-footed Bowles. The 5-foot-6 Faber covered roughly five feet of space in a split second and landed the huge uppercut.

"I feel really good man. I feel great. I came out looking for the win and get a big finish like that. I think Brian Bowles is a warrior. I like that guy a lot. I had a general game plan going out there but I had to be ready. I'm sad for him but I'm really stoked for me right now," Faber said.

Bowles simply couldn't recover from the bomb landed by Faber.

"It was a tough fight, there isn't really much I can say about it. I went out there and I just really never got in my groove. Took a big punch, got rocked. He gave me a couple pounds on the ground and I didn't recover. I was rattled when he got the choke and I just never got back," Bowles said.

AMADI: Who Cost You Money at UFC 139? A Betting Breakdown of Henderson vs. Rua Event

By: Jason Amadi, MMATorch Columnist

Staff10Amadi_130_13.jpg
Betting on mixed martial arts can be difficult. MMA is a sport where hyperbole and platitudes are often passed off as quality fight analysis. As a result, fans are often confused when it comes to predicting outcomes and making coin off your favorite fighters. Well fret no longer, this is the debut of a new column dedicated to maximizing your ability to predict future fights and aiding your filthy gambling habit.

UFC 139 was a great card if you love underdogs. According to the lines on Bodog.com, the underdogs came through on every main card fight with the exception of Brian Bowles.

Dan Henderson (+125) vs. Mauricio Rua (-155)

The most interesting thing about this fight from a betting perspective is that it was a five round fight. Neither of these fighters have ever had great cardio. Forget the "Dan Henderson has cardio for days at 205" nonsense. That isn't true. Forget the "Shogun only gasses after a long layoff" foolishness. That's never been true either.

These are two incredibly dangerous fighters with cardio issues and that made for a supremely exciting fight. There are two big takeaways here if you're concerned with who to bet on in the future: Henderson's cardio is just as big a liability at 205 as it 185, and Shogun's knees prevent him from moving the way he needs to. Shogun was right in front of Henderson for the majority of the first three rounds and was unable to dart in and out or use much lateral movement. Against fighters who pack the kind of punch that Dan Henderson does, Shogun's lack of movement will cost him rounds, if not get him knocked out.

A bet on Dan Henderson is a bet on that big right hand to land early. He's probably going to get that done against most fighters he faces against 205 or 185, but it just so happens Mauricio Rua has one of the best chins in the sport.

Against elite competition, you might want to be careful laying cake on Shogun. His cardio has never been great, his knees are always going to be an issue, but he's a supremely talented fighter. It's a tricky situation for sure, but against guys with big power or great wrestling, remember to avoid Shogun at all costs.

Urijah Faber (-210) vs. Brian Bowles (+170)

Like Miguel Torres, Urijah Faber was a dominant champion at a point where the lower weight classes weren't nearly as established as they are now. Unlike Torres, Faber has been consistent enough to earn title opportunities before falling short against the elite of the featherweight and bantamweight divisions.

On Saturday night, Faber was able to secure himself his fourth title shot in about three years. That may seem excessive, but it's because he is so much better than most of the bantamweight and featherweight divisions, and it showed against Brian Bowles.

Faber has the kind of speed and explosion that you imagine a lighter weight athlete should have. He was on a totally different level when it came to speed, technique, and strength and showed why he was the only favorite on the card to pull off the win.

Considering Faber's next fight is against a fighter that may be faster, stronger, and more explosive than him, he's probably going to have a rough time. Dominick Cruz was able to dance circles around and get takedowns against Faber in the past. A third meeting between Cruz and Faber favors the champion, but Faber has the power and speed to catch him, and could be worth a play.

Cung Le (-225) vs. Wanderlei Silva (+175)

You probably won't find many people willing to argue that the Wanderlei Silva of today is as good as the Wanderlei Silva that spent five years as Pride Middleweight Champion. However, that's not what this fight was about. This fight was about whether or not Cung Le had the skills to find Silva's chin and whether or not Le had the firepower to fell "The Axe Murderer" in the fashion in which Dan Henderson, Mirko Cro Cop, Quinton Jackson, and Chris Leben were able.

Ultimately, what we found out is what many have suspected for a long time; Cung Le isn't enough of a high level mixed martial arts fighter to survive Wanderlei Silva. Le was able to find Silva's chin, but just didn't have the skills to do so with regularity or close the show when he did. "The Axe Murderer" was a huge step up in competition for Le and knew enough about distance to effectively shut down his kicking game. Without the ability to do damage with his kicks, Le tired out and wasn't competent enough with his hands to exchange with Silva.

Wanderlei Silva isn't ?back.? He proved against Keith Jardine, Michael Bisping and now Cung Le that he's still capable of beating good fighters. Silva's problem is facing off against heavy hitters and remaining conscious.

There's a good chance you won't have to worry about putting money on Cung Le in the future unless it's to see him in theaters, but with a win, Wanderlei Silva lives to fight on. Against measured strikers without the punching power of a Chris Leben or Dan Henderson, "The Axe Murderer" still has a chance to stick around at 185.

With the right matchup, Wanderlei can still bring the violence pretty strong. As cold as it may sound, Wanderlei Silva has been concussed so many times that he's going to be the underdog for most of his fights. If the UFC puts him up against the right style matchup, Silva can still make you money.

Martin Kampmann (+115) vs. Rick Story (-145)

There are plenty of fighters whose styles appeal to the judges. Unfortunately, Martin Kampmann is not one of those fighters. Kampmann entering this fight as a slight underdog was completely appropriate.

While the Dane is a kickboxer by trade, he's more of a sharpshooter than he is a power puncher. If you bet on Story here, it was likely because of you were expecting the Rick Story that fought Thiago Alves earlier this year to meet the Martin Kampmann that couldn't stay off the fence against Diego Sanchez and Paul Daley.

Instead, Martin Kampmann turned to his grappling, which usually gets him more victories than his striking. It turned out to be Story who spent much of the fight with his back against the fence, defending the takedowns of Martin Kampmann.

Though Story is a good wrestler and was able to get past quality grapplers like Johny Hendricks in the past, lately he's been unable to deal with guys like Charlie Brenneman and Martin Kampmann who pressure him with takedowns the way he's used to doing to his opponents.

In the future, be careful about laying money on Story against fighters capable of dictating the pace. "The Horror" seems to love being the hammer, but can't quite come back from being the nail.

Stephan Bonnar (+120) vs. Kyle Kingsbury (-150)

Kyle Kingsbury looks like an Adonis, fights out of one of the best camps in the sport, and Stephan Bonnar lost to Mark Coleman. Bonnar heading into this fight as the underdog made all the sense in the world in that regard. But betting on Kingsbury to win against a fighter who's never been finished, means that you're betting on the conditioning of a big, rocked up light heavyweight who's known to fade late.

The key to this fight was whether or not Kingsbury could out-wrestle Bonnar early, establish a lead and ride out the clock to get a decision victory. Kingsbury's wrestling failed him here, as it was Bonnar who controlled the wrestling throughout and secured himself a unanimous decision victory in one of his best performances to date.

Moving forward, be careful about picking Kingsbury to win against durable fighters. At 205, Kingsbury's cardio is a real liability and unless he can fell a guy early, he's likely to give up rounds late.
