What Now? UFC 146: Dos Santos vs Mir

With UFC 146 now behind us, the time to play armchair matchmaker is now here. With all bouts taking place in the heavyweight class, a picture of bouts to make behind the event becomes a tad bit more clear when looking at the landscape of the division.

Injured champ Dominick Cruz says rival Urijah Faber will only fight for ?No. 1 contender?s belt?

A downcast Dominick Cruz said Wednesday that he'll be back better than ever from the anterior cruciate ligament tear he suffered last week that forced cancellation of his bantamweight title defense on July 7 against rival Urijah Faber, that was to be the co-main event of UFC 148 in Las Vegas.

Cruz, the UFC bantamweight champion, was sparring when he injured the knee. The ACL tear was diagnosed on Sunday in Las Vegas following an MRI. Cruz said the swelling needs to decrease before he can proceed with the surgery.

"It was a normal day in practice," Cruz told Cagewriter. "I went for a weird trip and it folded my knee. There was a really loud pop and I was kind of in denial the rest of the night. The next day, I went in and got an MRI. I got the results on Sunday and by Monday, the news was out."

On Tuesday on Fuel TV, UFC president Dana White said that Faber would fight an opponent to be named at UFC 148 for the interim belt. Cruz will fight the winner when he's healed. Cruz said recovery time is six to nine months, which will likely mean it will be at least 14 months between fights for him. He last fought in October when he defeated Demetrious Johnson via unanimous decision.

White didn't release names, but Faber did later on the show.

Dominick's been out since his last fight and has had several injuries. I think I'll be fighting Renan Barao, Ivan Menjivar or maybe Michael McDonald.

He'll carry a belt around, should he wins, and that will undoubtedly gall Cruz. There is no love lost between the two and they were paired as coaches on the current season of The Ultimate Fighter as a way to take advantage of the heat between them.

If Faber wins at UFC 148, he'll be the interim champion, but Cruz said that won't mean much.

"First of all, it's not like Faber is a lock to beat whoever they put him again," Cruz said. "If he gets it -- and that's a big if -- he won't be carrying around the championship belt. I am the champion and I have the belt. He'll have a No. 1 contender's belt.

"If he has that, big deal. You have to beat the champ to be the champion and he won't have beaten the champion. It's no guarantee he'll win no matter who he fights, but regardless of what happens, I hope he's happy running around with a No. 1 contender's belt, if he gets it."

Cruz said the only time he thinks of the injury is when he does interviews, which forces him to relieve the bad moment. But he said while it will hurt financially, he'll make it OK.

"I live humbly for this reason exactly," Cruz said. "Every fighter lives and dies by his own body. If you're a Trophy Truck driver and the truck breaks down, there is no season. As fighters, our bodies are our Trophy Trucks. This is a minor setback, but I live humbly knowing a situation like this could occur."

Junior dos Santos wants to break UFC records as Champ, says "let's do it" to Cain Velasquez rematch

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

DosSantosJunior_180_22.jpg
In the history of the UFC Heavyweight Championship, no fighter has defended the belt more than twice in a row, with Randy Couture, Tim Sylvia, and Brock Lesnar tying for that mark.

After notching his first successful defense of the belt this past Saturday night at UFC 146, Junior dos Santos is hell-bent on beating that record.

"One more and I'll [tie] their record," dos Santos commented in an interview with Tatame.com. "I'll try to, God bless me. I want to hold this title for a long time and I will do it alright. I'm working hard."

First up to tie that record will likely be the man he took the title from, Cain Velasquez. For dos Santos, that's not a problem at all, and he's ready for whatever obstacle the UFC throws in front of him.

"Let's do it," he responded when asked about the Velasquez matchup. "I don't care who my next opponent is. It depends on UFC and, whoever it is, I'll be ready to do my best and keep this title for a long time."

The conversation turned to Alistair Overeem, as it often does with dos Santos these days, and he once again made his feelings on the potential for that bout clear.

"I don't think about fighting anybody," dos Santos said. "Overeem is paying the price to do drugs. If he keeps on doing it, I hope they keep him far away from me. If he stops doing it and come to fight a fair fight for us who don't use it, he will be welcomed. If UFC wants to match me up against him someday, I'll do my best to beat him."

Penick's Analysis: With big strikers swinging four ounce gloves in the heavyweight division, the reality is that anything can happen, and that has led to very few fighters having really long winning streaks in the division. Dos Santos has been the exception to this point, and there is no reason to believe he's going to be beaten anytime soon, but again, anything can, has, and will happen in the UFC's heavyweight division. If he can avoid the upsets, he may yet go down as the best Champ the UFC's seen at heavyweight. He's only got a short way to go to break that record, but he could definitely be the man to set an entirely new bar for heavyweights in the future.

Dana White: Brock Lesnar might want to come back

During the UFC all-heavyweight main card at UFC 146 on Saturday night, one of the promotion's best-known heavyweights was sitting in crowd. Brock Lesnar, who recently retired from the UFC and went back to a career in pro wrestling, was shown on camera. He was just there as a fan ... right?

Well, maybe. UFC president Dana White hinted there may have been more to Brock Lesnar's attendance than a weekend trip to Las Vegas.

"He texted me and said, 'I want to come to the fight, but keep it quiet because I don't want to tell anybody,'" White said. "He said, 'What are you doing tonight? ... I want to talk face to face.'

"You never know with him. He might want to come back. He might just want to hang out."

Lesnar's career in the UFC just had seven fights, but four of them had a title on the line. He beat Randy Couture for the belt in his fourth MMA bout, and appeared unbeatable after a title defense against Frank Mir. A bout of diverticulitis slowed Lesnar, and he lost to Cain Velasquez and Alistair Overeem in his last two MMA bouts.

After walking away from MMA in December, Lesnar returned to WWE. His most recent matches featured a loss to John Cena and then a win over Triple H using a Kimura, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu moved he learned as a fighter.

Though he did lose his last two fights, Lesnar's talent cannot be denied. He was an NCAA Division I champion, bringing wrestling skills to the cage. He was also an unrelenting striker.

Though it's been just months since he left the UFC, he would be returning to a division that is stronger than ever. Junior dos Santos defended his belt against Mir and Velasquez TKOed Antonio Silva at UFC 146. Daniel Cormier just won the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix and emerged as a contender for the UFC belt.

If his face-to-face talk with White does lead to a return, Lesnar won't get an easy fight. He will make the already-intriguing heavyweight division more interesting.

M-1 champion Vinny Magalhaes put championship belt on eBay

If you want an MMA championship belt -- a valid one not sold at local toys stores -- you can either train for years and win it, or be the highest bidder on the M-1 belt that Vinny Magalhaes is selling on eBay.

UFC veteran Magalhaes won the M-1 light heavyweight belt last April and defended it in October, but then found himself in a long, public squabble with M-1 management. He and M-1 director of operations Evgeni Kogan have exchanged nasty insults over Twitter after Magalhaes was not happy with the fights the Russian-based promotion was making, and Kogan supposedly coached one of Magalhaes' opponents from ringside, a huge no-no for a promoter who should be unbiased.

Since Magalhaes said he is through his contract and wants to move on from the promotion, he has no reason to hold on to the belt. He put it on eBay, starting bids at $0.09. At the time of writing, it's up to $2,605. Magalhaes tweeted the link and told Kogan, "Hey buddy, you wanted your belt back? #placeyourbid it's on @ebay :)"

Thanks, Bloody Elbow.

MMA Marketplace: Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix match-up of the walkout shirts

At Saturday's Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix final, Josh Barnett and Daniel Cormier will face off in the finals of a tournament that neither was expected to win. It's time to break down the most important aspect of their bout: their shirts.

On the left, you have Cormier's shirt from TrauMMA which is designed as a nod to his Louisiana roots with the fleur-de-lis and hometown flag on his shoulder. On the right is Barnett's latest shirt. It's not designated as a walkout shirt, but it's his latest available.

Though Barnett's shirt would make a cool design on a black light painting circa 1996, it's falling flat as a t-shirt. For going with an unconventional color and meaningful imagery, Cormier is the winner. Buy his shirt for $29.98, and Barnett's for $19.98.

PEREZ: The UFC 146 Highlight Reel - Top Five Talking Points From "Dos Santos vs. Mir" Event

By: Anwar Perez, MMATorch Columnist

Staff10Perez_130_11.jpg
There is no question about it, the UFC 146 PPV card delivered on high expectations, and left no doubt in viewers' minds that this was clearly the best overall card the UFC had produced in a long time. An all heavyweight main card satisfied on so many levels, and shows that the division is the best it has ever been. Here are my top five talking points from the night.

5. Brock Lesnar Back?

Not so fast. Sure, Brock was shown watching the main event between Frank Mir and Junior dos Santos. And yes, he hardly attended other UFC events that he was not a part of. But let's be serious. The whole world knows about Lesnar being back in the WWE, and Lesnar coming back to the UFC to fight isn't going to happen any time soon. He's got a contract with WWE, and if nothing else, he was just there drumming up some business for both the WWE and UFC. It's good business to get exposure to a mass audience if you can. The WWE knows it, and so does Dana White. Lesnar is a hype-machine and him appearing at a UFC event after subsequently retiring last year, has created much hype. So it's no surprise that this is a topic of discussion in the aftermath of UFC 146.

4. Disappointing Debuts

Both Shane Del Rosario and Big Foot Silva were ready to make their UFC debuts and make a splash in the heavyweight division. Disappointingly, both fighters came up short. Rosario got taken out by Stipe Miocic in their fight, as Rosario couldn't combat the ground game that Miocic presented. Big Foot Silva got the worst end of the deal. His fight against Cain Velasquez was a bloodbath, and all from Silva's face. Silva had nothing for Velasquez and looked outclassed even before the bleeding began. It was a rough night for both fighters coming over from Strikeforce and making their UFC debuts.

3. Feel Good (and Bittersweet) Wins for Hardy, Nelson, and Brown

The UFC has made it clear that as long as you win or put on Fight of the Night worthy fights each time, you are likely going to keep your job. All three fighters had been struggling as of late, most notably Dan Hardy. Hardy hadn't won in over two years, but was given this last opportunity to keep his job within the UFC. Both Roy Nelson and Mike Brown had been struggling as well, having issues piecing together a string of wins to keep them near the top of the heap. All three fighters won, with both Hardy and Nelson having impressive KO wins against their opponents and Brown winning a decision. When reality hits after all these feel-good moments fade, the questions becomes what more can these fighters offer to the rest of their respective divisions? Brown discussed retirement, knowing that the fight game may have passed him by. With the evolution of the fighter growing by leaps and bounds, fighters like Dan Hardy and Roy Nelson may be entertaining, and fan favorites, but that doesn't hide the fact that these are fighters that are being passed by the sport and younger fighters ready to take it to the next level. Enjoy the return of your winning ways gentlemen, but by the time the holiday weekend is over, reality will set in, and you are left with "what now?"

2. The Hype Bubble for Mayhem and Mir has Burst

Both Frank Mir and Jason "Mayhem" Miller are true artists at hyping their fights. They talk a big game to build themselves up as these "top-tier fighters" that are on the cusp of championship gold. The truth of the matter is that they are nowhere near that level. Let's be honest; the quality of fighters that both have faced that led to their "status" are questionable at the least. Mir's last three wins were against fighters that are good to legendary, except for the fact that both the legends (Mirko Cro Cop and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueria) are way past their prime, and nowhere near the excellence of a fighter, like where Cain Velasquez is at now. Mir has built his reputation as a guy that takes limbs. That's great. Now when you add to the fact that those limbs belong to a never-was like Tim Sylvia and an aging Nogueria, of course you're going to look better in comparison. Miller on the other hand has no clear wins over anyone that has mattered in the last few years. He's more known for his antics than fighting "skill," and even that is questionable. Yes, he puts on a show to be entertaining, but you know what entertains? Being a good fighter. Miller is not. So, can we now move on from a.) "this is the best Frank Mir has ever looked (Rogan says that EVERY time)" and b.) the sideshow, outclassed Mayhem Miller justifying his existence in MMA as the "funny" guy?

1. Junior Dos Santos: The People's Champ

Chael Sonnen has proclaimed himself as "The People's Champion" for MMA fans around the world. This is mostly hype, as truthfully, that belongs to the Heavyweight Champion dos Santos. Here is a fighter that came from nothing. Let alone his childhood and family background, look at his career in the UFC. He came out of nowhere, and slowly and steadily built his persona and legacy based on being a nice guy and working hard. That's rare to find in ANY job, let alone a competitive sport. Dos Santos comes across as the nicest fighter you could meet, and truly feels blessed to be in the position he is in now. He said (after he won the championship) "that if you work hard and stay positive, you can achieve anything" and last night was just a continuation of that. He outclassed and tossed aside Frank Mir, and you actually LIKED him for beating up on Mir. Not that Mir is the most likeable guy, but witnessing dos Santos fight and win, you are watching a fighter living his dream. You are watching him grow, and as fans, we feel the connection that we are watching something special with this nice guy that came from nothing, and from the looks of it, is going to stay UFC Heavyweight Champion for a long time.

UFC 146 Prelim Results: Darren Elkins survives first round onslaught, beats Diego Brandao by decision

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Diego Brandao, winner of The Ultimate Fighter's 14th season, failed to follow up on his December TUF Finale win on Saturday night, as he dropped a decision to Darren Elkins at UFC 146.

Brandao started very strongly, beating Elkins up for the entirety of the first round. The assault included a vicious flying knee and some excellent ground and pound, but Elkins survived the onslaught to make it out of the frame.

From there, Elkins' takedowns and top game were the story, as Brandao was drained from his first round attack and could only try to defend from his back for much of the next ten minutes. Ultimately, Elkins won both the second and third, and handed Brandao his first UFC loss. Elkins himself is now undefeated in the UFC's featherweight division, with this serving as his third straight submission win since dropping from lightweight.

Weekend warriors: Maiquel Falcao, Karl Amoussou and Al Iaquinta big winners

Strikeforce is still on the brain, but let's take a second to check out the other fights that happened this weekend.

At Bellator 69, Mark Kolata qualified for next season's heavyweight tournament with a verbal submission of Abe Wagner with an Achilles lock. As expected, Jessica Aguilar and Megumi Fujii put on a great three-round fight with Aguilar taking the decision. After getting his protective cup situation figured out, Karl Amoussou used his judo and withstood a strong third round from David Rickels to get a decision win and a spot in the Bellator welterweight tournament final against Bryan Baker. In the final of the middleweight tournament, Maiquel Falcao beat Andreas Spang in a decision. He overcame a point deduction for an illegal knee to still win the tournament.

Two more semifinalists were chosen on "The Ultimate Fighter." Team Cruz's Vinc Pichel took the two-round decision from Team Faber's Chris Saunders. Though Saunders thought the fight was going to the third round, the judges said the bout was over. There was no such controversy in the second bout with two Team Faber fighters facing off. Al Iaquinta knocked out Andy Ogle near the end of the first round.

The semifinal match-ups will be James Vick vs. Michael Chiesa and Pichel vs. Iaquinta. Also during the episode, UFC president Dana White announced Urijah Faber's new opponent at UFC 148 will be Renan Barao.

UFC 146 Prelim Results: Jamie Varner shocks Edson Barboza in first round, hands him first career loss

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Jamie Varner made his return to Zuffa on Saturday night at UFC 146 in a short notice fight against the undefeated Edson Barboza. The former WEC Champion had won three of four fights since going winless in four in 2010, but Barboza entered off a "Knockout of the Year" front-runner in January.

Conventional wisdom pegged the fight as clearly in Barboza's favor, but Varner had other things in mind, and he shocked everyone with a TKO win in the first round.

The upset came just over three minutes into the opening round, as Varner just swarmed Barboza after hurting him with a few strikes. Once Barboza was backed up to the cage, Varner went for the kill, and unleashed an onslaught that led to the stoppage.

Varner has now stopped three straight fights in the first round, and has a new lease on his career after this upset win in his UFC return.

When the savvy fan saw Brock Lesnar's mug displayed prominently during last night's 'UFC 146: Dos Santos vs. Mir' broadcast, they figured that the professional wrestler was in Las Vegas for more than just to watch the fights. Sure enough, UFC president Dana White revealed that he and Lesnar had a meeting set up that night to discuss his possible return to action.

UFC 146 "DOS SANTOS VS. MIR" PREVIEW: Penick's breakdown and fight predictions for all-heavyweight event in Las Vegas

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

UFC_146_poster_180_3.jpg
The path to Saturday night's UFC 146 event has been a massively rocky one, with every main card fight being changed from its originally scheduled incarnation. It started at the top with the UFC Heavyweight Championship and trickled down the rest of the night's event, but the card still brings a night full of heavyweight action with ten of the UFC's behemoths squaring off in Las Vegas. Here's what's in store for the event:

Junior dos Santos vs. Frank Mir (UFC Heavyweight Championship)

The general line of thought heading into this Championship fight is that Mir's only chance is to bring the fight to the ground. His striking power can't be entirely counted out, though. He's got surprisingly heavy hands, and when he does connect he can do a lot of damage with them, and he's a sneaky striker at times as well.

That doesn't change the issues he has getting hit, however. Against Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in December, he was nearly knocked out before getting into that kimura position on the ground. By all logic, dos Santos' immense power and superior boxing game make him the easy favorite to score a knockout in this fight.

If Mir can somehow get the fight to the ground, he's definitely capable of catching dos Santos in a submission hold, but dos Santos is likely going to be a capable grappler himself considering who he trains with. He won't be submitting Mir, but his defense should be adequate on the ground.

I won't be at all surprised if Mir finds a way to pull off an upset, either by scoring a knockdown and locking something on or getting the fight to the ground and snatching a submission. However, dos Santos is rightfully favored because it's more than likely that he will score the knockout win before Mir is able to do any of those things.

PREDICTION: Dos Santos via KO in the first round

Cain Velasquez vs. Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva (Heavyweight)

"Bigfoot" Silva blames a lack of motivation for his absolute starching at the hands of Daniel Cormier last September, but it can't be forgotten that he got outstruck by Fabricio Werdum in their bout, and nearly got knocked out by light heavyweight Mike Kyle before his size took over in that fight.

Velasquez is a taller version of Daniel Cormier, and though his wrestling isn't quite at his coach's level, he's immensely capable on that front. And he's a great striker as well with a ton more speed than Silva.

There's just no reason to believe this fight is going to be any different than the Cormier-Silva bout from last September. Velasquez is too fast for Silva on their feet, and he's much too good a wrestler to be caught on his back with Silva ground and pounding him.

PREDICTION: Velasquez via TKO in the first round

Roy Nelson vs. Dave "PeeWee" Herman (Heavyweight)

Herman taking this fight on short notice doesn't necessarily bode well for his cardio holding up. He didn't look great against Stefan Struve in February in suffering a second round TKO loss, and while Nelson has lost three of his last four, a three round fight is certainly something he can handle.

Herman's not going to be able to stop Nelson, and he's more than likely to fade as the fight goes on. Nelson's had some struggles recently, but they've been against top flight competition. His three losses in four fights were to the two fighting for the title Saturday night and Fabricio Werdum. That's some very difficult opposition, and all three losses came by decision.

Nelson is simply the better fighter into this fight. Herman doesn't have power above those three fighters - all of whom couldn't put Nelson away - and he's not going to go three full rounds with Nelson, either. This one seems fairly easy to call.

PREDICTION: Nelson via TKO in the third round

Stipe Miocic vs. Shane Del Rosario (Heavyweight)

Shane Del Rosario was one of Strikforce's brightest prospects before suffering several injuries in a car accident last year. That accident took him out of a bout with Daniel Cormier last June, and indeed has kept him out of action until Saturday night's card.

He was supposed to face Gabriel Gonzaga in this debut, which would have marked a stern test from a veteran talent in the heavyweight division, but with the shuffling of fights Del Rosario now faces another prospect in Miocic.

Miocic has won eight straight fights to kick off his young MMA career, including his first two inside the Octagon. He steps into this bout on short notice after a first round knockout win over Philip De Fries on the UFC's debut card on Fuel in February.

Del Rosario has a wide array of skills inside the cage, and has finished every opponent he's ever faced. However, coming off a year long layoff due to injury may not be a good sign for a fighter who has only left the first round once. If he doesn't finish Miocic in quick fashion, his cardio will be tested as the fight drags on. That said, Miocic is also entering on short notice himself, so he may not be in tip top shape either, and he's only been past the second round once in his career.

The injury layoff for Del Rosario is concerning coming into this fight, and Miocic is a tough out as well. Because of that, it's hard to put a lot of confidence in him for this first fight back.

PREDICTION: Miocic via decision

Stefan Struve vs. Lavar Johnson (Heavyweight)

Johnson's got the ability to knock Struve out in the first round, even on very short notice. That said, if this fight hits the ground, it's going to be over in quick fashion the other way.

Struve's got to avoid letting Johnson get within his reach advantage, and he needs to get the fight to the ground. He's got such a massive edge in the grappling game that it's absolutely in his best interest to bring the fight to the ground as soon as possible.

This really is Struve's fight to lose, and if he tries to stay standing with Johnson it will be a major mistake on his part. He should be smart enough to avoid a firefight, and because of that he should score his fifth win in six fights.

PREDICTION: Struve via submission in the first round

======Preliminary Card Quick Picks======

* Diego Brandao over Darren Elkins via TKO in the second round
* Edson Barboza over Jamie Varner via decision
* Jason "Mayhem" Miller over C.B. Dollaway via submission in the second round
* Duane Ludwig over Dan Hardy via decision
* Jacob Volkmann over Paul Sass via decision
* Glover Teixeira over Kyle Kingsbury via TKO in the second round
* Mike Brown over Daniel Pineda via decision

Daniel Cormier and Josh Barnett both broke their hands in the first round of their Strikeforce bout

Daniel Cormier and Josh Barnett fought most of their five-round bout with broken hands at Strikeforce on Saturday night. Cormier broke his right hand, the same one he broke in knocking out Antonio Silva in September. Barnett broke his left hand and headed straight to the hospital after losing the decision in the final of the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix.

Both men are planning to see surgeons after their grueling bout. Cormier wants to make sure this injury isn't recurring.

"I think this time I'm going to take a different approach," Cormier said. "I think I'm going to have surgery on it and get it fixed, because I don't want it to be recurring and then end up costing me later and later on down the line."

Barnett's manager said the fighter will see an orthopedist to find out how serious the injury is.

Five-round fights are difficult without any injuries. Cormier and Barnett were forced to use different weapons throughout their bout to find a way to the judges' decision.

Video - Junior dos Santos' UFC debut against Fabricio Werdum (full fight)

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Junior dos Santos made his UFC debut back in 2008 in spectacular fashion, shocking almost everyone with an upset knockout win over Fabricio Werdum. Almost four years later, he's now the UFC Heavyweight Champion, and makes his first title defense on Saturday night at UFC 146. As a bonus to fans this week, Fuel TV has made the entire JDS vs. Werdum fight available for free online, and you can check it out below:

I feel like there are still questions to be answered about what kind of shots Velasquez can take, but considering Silva was the first man in a long time not to knock out Andrei Arlovski, I don't think we'll be getting those answers. It's still an interesting fight, though.

Quinton ?Rampage? Jackson and the UFC: Can this relationship be saved?

Lately, Quinton Jackson has been complaining about how he doesn't want to be in the UFC any more, and it appears the feeling is mutual from the UFC. They have become the couple that everyone knows should break up. Inexplicably, they stay together and annoy everyone around them. It's time to break this down, women's magazine style.

Cagewriter asks, can this relationship be saved?

Jackson says:

"After I leave the UFC, I'm done with them! ... The UFC's just throwing me all these boring fighters, these game planners, these wrestlers. I'm the type of fighter who you should match up with people who want to fight excitingly. You know what I'm saying? Cuz I'm gonna be the type of fighter who puts butts in seats."

UFC president Dana White says:

"I'll have a conversation with 'Rampage' and think we're cool, and then I'll read other stuff," he said. "We've been good to everybody we've ever dealt with. We've never screwed anybody over, including 'Rampage.' And you want to talk about a guy that we went to bat for ? we've gone to bat for him many times. I feel like [expletive] (Derek) Jeter when it comes to 'Rampage.' If he's unhappy with us, doesn't like us and doesn't want to be with us anymore, then the feeling is mutual."

Cagewriter responds, NO. This relationship cannot be saved. Jackson is miserable and will not be quiet until he is free from the UFC, so UFC? Let him go. Give him a quick fight to finish out his contract, or just cut him. White says both sides don't want to work with each other any more. Why prolong the agony?

Not all (business) relationships are built to last. Tear this one down.

Alan Belcher survived a Rousimar Palhares leg lock and wants to help you do the same

Alan Belcher recently survived one of Rousimar Palhares' leg locks and went on to win by TKO at UFC on Fox 3. To give you an idea how rare that is, half of Palhares' 14 wins have come via a leg submission. Generally, when "Toquinho" gets a hold of a leg, the only way to get out is by tapping.

But Belcher solved his the Palhares puzzle and wants to help you (yes, you!) do it, too. After being approached by several people for tips, the jiu-jitsu black belt is going to teach how he gameplanned for Palhares, and how he executed it while in the fight.

On Thurs., May 24, at 8:30 E.T., Belcher will hold a free webinar complete with drills, defenses, and conditioning moves. If you want to learn from Belcher, sign up here. Seminars with fighters of Belcher's caliber will often cost you hundreds, so anyone training should take part.

Athletes will often guard their game plans like nuclear missile launch codes. It says a ton about both Belcher's character and his confidence in his game that he'll share his secrets to anyone who asks.

Thanks, Fightlinker.

Quick Pic: X-ray of Josh Barnett's broken hand following Strikeforce Grand Prix loss to Daniel Cormier

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Early in the first round of what would be a 25-minute fight against Daniel Cormier on Saturday night, Josh Barnett broke his hand with a punch. He appeared to be in excruciating pain once the fight was completed, but he battled through the injury and fought on for all 25 minutes.

Of course, he was beaten rather soundly in most of the rounds, and ended up losing the decision in the finals of the Strikeforce Heavyweight World Grand Prix, but he stuck in there and did as best he could with the injury throughout the fight.

On Sunday, he Tweeted out a picture of the X-ray, and it's easy to see why he was in such pain afterward. Still, it was a commendable effort considering all that Cormier was throwing and landing during the fight. Kudos to Barnett for trying to fight on despite this broken bone. Check out the x-ray below:
