Ratings for The Ultimate Fighter's 14th season stayed steady with Wednesday's sixth episode, bringing in an average of 1.6 million viewers, in line with last week's fifth episode.

Featuring two more fights, bringing the final featherweight into the semifinals and getting one fighter closer in the bantamweight division as well, the episode was the third most watched program on cable in the UFC's key demographics of men 18-34 and men 18-49, again coming behind the South Park/Nick Swardson's Pretend Time hour on Comedy Central and "American Horror Story" on FX.

Showtime-Strikeforce Negotiations Ongoing, but Now With Dana White Involved

LAS VEGAS -- Strikeforce isn't quite dead yet.

Following a recent shakeup at Showtime that saw former sports head Ken Hershman leave for HBO, it seems that there is a renewed hope that the premium cable network might be able to strike a deal with Strikeforce.

So far, there's been at least one change to the ongoing negotiations. While they had previously been handled by Zuffa co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta, White has taken the reigns in search of a new deal.

"I was in New York [Wednesday] and met with Showtime," White said following a UFC 137 press conference on the Brooklyn Bridge replica outside the New York New York Hotel. "That's why I was there. So yeah, I'm it now. I took over."

White said he was able to inject himself into the situation now that Hershman is gone. The two have had a notoriously rocky history over the years, with White pulling no punches over his thoughts on Hershman. Even now that the executive has moved on, White did the same, saying dealing with the channel has gotten a lot easier now that he's gone.

Why?

"Because he's an idiot, and the rest of the guys aren't," he said.

As of now though, there is still no deal. So for the time being, reports of other Strikeforce fighters -- Fabricio Werdum, for example -- defecting to the UFC will come to a close. The timeframe for a decision has been extended as the two sides attempt to keep the promotion alive past the first quarter of 2012. But at least there is a newfound sense of optimism involved.

"I had a great meeting with them," he said. "We'll see how it goes. I met with all of them, the whole crew. It went very well, and we'll see how it progresses."

Roy Nelson Keeping His Cool Ahead of Crucial UFC 137 Bout

Filed under:

Roy NelsonAsk Roy Nelson how he's been preparing for his fight against Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic at UFC 137, and you'll find that "Big Country's" sense of humor is still very much intact after two straight losses.

"I've just been working out in the cemetery a lot," he told MMA Fighting recently. "I've got to get ready for the left kick. I want to see what it's like."

It's a typical Roy Nelson answer, which is to say slightly absurd and said with a straight face, as if to daring you to say, 'No, seriously.' But these aren't joking times for Nelson. After coming up short against Junior dos Santos and then Frank Mir, Nelson is facing a potentially dire situation.

Don't tell him that, of course.

"All fights are dire," Nelson said. "I've seen guys get cut after one. I've seen guys lose three or four and still have a job. In this business, there's no rhyme or reason. It's MMA. It's like when you go into the Octagon: anything can happen."

If Nelson didn't already know that, he got a quick education in his fight against Mir. He knew he was getting sick before the bout, he said. He'd been shaking hands at a recent UFC Fan Expo and "I must have touched some dirty people and didn't wash my hands enough."

Even when he realized he was coming down with something, he refused to take antibiotics because he worried about the effect they might have on his cardio, Nelson said. Then again, not taking them didn't do much to help him either.

"In that fight, I just hit a wall. And I hit a wall fast. I hit the wall, like, the first minute. I think it kind of showed on my face in the fight. But I pushed through it, gave a hundred percent of what I had, and just came out on the losing end."

The Tuesday after the fight, Nelson would stagger into the emergency room and find out that he had walking pneumonia. Even with a course of antibiotics, he'd spend the next month or so trying to kick the illness. He'd also end up questioning whether taking a fight against a former UFC heavyweight champion in this state was really the best career move.

"The one thing that I definitely learned from this one is, I'm always a fighter first and a businessman second, and that one taught me to be a businessman before a fighter. When you're injured or sick, the thing is, you've still got to provide for your family. I hadn't fought for ten months before that, and I'm just trying to put food on the table and take care of my bills. It was one of those things, plus it was an awesome opportunity. You beat Frank and you're right back in the mix."

Since Nelson couldn't beat 'em, however, he decided to join 'em. He's been working out with his old foe Mir in preparation for the bout with Filipovic. He and Mir don't talk about their fight, Nelson said, because "it's in the past."

Nelson's future lies in the cage with Cro Cop. If he doesn't come out on the winning end of that one, it will bring his losing streak to three, which is often the magic number that brings the ax down on a fighter's UFC contract. Since Cro Cop has also lost two straight -- and since he's in the last fight of his current deal -- the loser in this fight could very well end up out of a job.

"It's so cliche, you know. You have to beat a legend to be a legend. But I think just to fight Cro Cop, period, is something that, as a fighter, you just want to do," Nelson said. "You want to be able to say, hey, I competed with some of the best of the world."

You want to be able to say it eventually, when you're looking back at a long successful career. But if Nelson doesn't find a way to beat Filipovic, he's in danger of reaching that point sooner than he wants to.

Maybe "anything can happen" in the Octagon, but one thing that can't happen is coming out on the losing end and remaining employed indefinitely. You can bet that a businessman-fighter like Nelson knows that as well as anyone. Now he just has to fight accordingly.

Dominick Cruz shares his gross, surgically-repaired hand

UFC bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz broke his hand when beating Demetrious Johnson on Oct. 1. His performance had UFC president Dana White raving about Cruz's toughness. Though he's had hand injuries before, Cruz needed surgery this time to repair his hand.

He had that surgery this week, and he was kind enough to share that the picture of his hand just after the procedure.

Dominick Cruz shares his gross, surgically-repaired hand

Look at the size of that thing. Remember that Cruz is a bantamweight, but his hand is so swollen that it looks like he's borrowing Shane Carwin's 4X paw.

What's nice about this picture is that it could effectively be incorporated into your Halloween decorating plans. Print it out, throw some glitter on it, and you'll win the neighborhood decorating contest, all thanks to Dominick Cruz.

THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER 14 REPORT 10/19: Hyden's (Virtual Time) Rundown of all the fights, all the drama on Spike TV

TUF_logo_Main_box_4.jpeg
By: Frank Hyden, MMATorch contributor

We start off with a recap of last week's show as Team Mayhem continued to shut out Team Bisping. The show starts with Team Mayhem celebrating Dustin Pague's win. Diego starts yelling for some reason. Don't know what's up with him, I guess he wants to fight.

Later, Jason "Mayhem" Miller comes to the house. Mayhem talks to some of the team about the rat on Team Mayhem, and finds out that it's John Dodson. The plan is to try to subvert the mole by mixing up the plans, and feeding Dodson false information. Steven Siler weighs in at at about 157lbs. He's still acting like he's going to fight next.

Team Bisping is told that Diego is going to fight. They're eating it up, just as Mayhem planned. Diego is training to prepare for what he believes is the upcoming fight.

They just showed a commercial for GSP vs. Condit. Way to be up to date, guys. Back to the shoe, Josh Ferguson grabs Dustin's cowboy hat. Josh feels that Dustin is ripping him off. Dustin thinks Akira did it. He proceeds to destroy everything he can find of Akira's. Dustin says he's going to crush Akira and all that. We'll see. Dustin trashes more of Akira's stuff. Take it easy, pal.

Akira finds all his stuff all over, and is pissed. Akira and Dustin go face to face, and Bisping steps in to break it up. Akira is yelling about fighting Dustin in the garden. Bisping is a bit perplexed by that, as am I.

The fight announcement is next. Dustin and Akira keep yelling at each other. Mayhem tells Dustin to calm down. Mayhem gets to pick the fight again, and he chooses Dustin Neace to fight Akira. Akira lunges at Dustin and they start rolling around. Mayhem and Bisping break them up. A member of Team Mayhem yells at Bisping, causing Bisping to yell at the guy. Then Mayhem yells at Bisping. We got a bunch of yelling going on. Mayhem then announces that Steven Siler will fight Diego next week. Bisping complains more about Mayhem. They yell at each other some more. Mayhem tells Dodson that he is responsible for what just happened.

Team Bisping is training now. Akira is working hard. Bisping is trying to get Akira to focus as much as possible. They're working Akira on his wrestling, he's not doing so well. Team Mayhem is training, and Dustin is working hard on his stand-up and grappling.

Bisping doesn't show at the weigh-in. Both guys weigh in without problems. Bisping comes roaring in and just gets it at the face-off. Dustin is confident that he'll outlast Akira. Akira says it isn't personal. It sure seemed that way earlier when you wanted to fight him in the garden.

FIGHT- Dustin Neace vs. Akira Corassani
Dustin is 1 inch taller and has a 0.5 inch reach advantage

ROUND 1- They start tentative. Both guys are trying to find their range. A minute in, and we finally get contact. Dustin is coming forward. Neither guy has thrown and connected yet. Akira gets Dustin down and stands over him. Akira drops down into Dustin's guard. Akira drops an elbow. Akira is staying on top. Dustin works for an arm. Akira is in Dustin's half-guard. Dustin grabs Akira's leg and it looked like he tapped, but I guess not. Akira works his way free and they stand up. Akira connects with a hard shot. Dustin goes for a takedown and gets it. The round ends as they stand up.

ROUND 2- Akira gets Dustin against the cage. Akira is landing some nice knees. They separate. Akira misses a spinning backfist. Akira with a nice counter-punch. Akira drops Dustin with a strong counter. Akira starts wailing on Dustin, but he's covering up. Akira working his ground-and-pound. Akira starts dropping some bombs on Dustin. Akira drops a hard elbow. Dustin rolls around, but is unable to escape. They're in North-South. Dustin tries for a triangle, but the position isn't right. Dustin almost is able to get a triangle, but the round ends.

Mayhem throws water at Bisping. Keith Kizer tells Akira he's about to get suspended. Dana White says it looks like Akira tapped in that first round. It looked that way to me, too.

WINNER- Akira Corassani by Decision

I don't agree with that decision. It looked to me like Akira tapped in that first round. I also would have given Dustin the first round. They should have gone to a 3rd round, if nothing else. Everyone says it looked like Akira tapped. Regardless, Akira moves on.

NEXT WEEK- 2 fights in this episode

'TUF 14' cast member Akira Corassani: 'If I tapped, my knee wouldn't even be stable'

Akira Corassani has been waiting for this moment since the day he left the house as a cast member of "The Ultimate Fighter 14." The Twitter messages, the traffic to his website, the message board postings - all of it.

As he predicted, his fight with Dustin Neace in the quarterfinals of the reality show competition has caused a stir. Fans say he tapped to Neace's heel hook in the first round. The tape tells the tale.

"Did I think of tapping? Hell yeah, I thought of tapping," Corassani today told MMAjunkie.com. "If you look at it - hundreds and hundreds of times I looked at it - when he's going to crank it (and) take it, my heel pops out, and he misses."

Vitor Belfort Discusses 'The Spider' & Brash American, Chael Sonnen

<B>By MATT MOLGAARD<BR>
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer</B><BR><BR>

Despite being handily dismantled by Anderson Silva back at UFC 126, Vitor Belfort still believes he?s capable of dethroning the champion, and he?s not afraid to make that known.<BR><BR>

In a recent interview with MMAInterviews.TV, Vitor dished on Silva, as well as the brash self-promoting machine, Chael Sonnen.<BR><BR>

When asked about the current champion, Belfort responded with respectful confidence, stating, "Hands down, he won the fight. We won't question that. We won't question his ability. We won't question his greatness as a fighter. He really accomplished his training that he did. It was a lucky moment, but it wasn't a lucky kick for him because he trained that kick, but it was a lucky moment in the fight. He knows I can knock him out."<BR><BR>

As for Chael, Vitor was surprisingly open to serve compliments.<BR><BR>

"If they want to give this fight to Chael Sonnen, Chael Sonnen has his moment, and I think he's the only guy who deserves to fight Anderson Silva in the moment, but besides him, I think I deserve a rematch," states Belfort. However, it wasn?t all compliments aimed at Chael, who Belfort does seem to respect.<BR><BR>

"Chael Sonnen is a very boring fighter. He doesn't knock people out, but he can wrestle you, and if you don't know the Jiu-Jitsu game, you'll be in trouble with him," Belfort observes.<BR><BR>

My First Fight: Rich Franklin

Filed under:

Rich FranklinBy the time most fight fans so much as heard his name, Rich Franklin was already somebody. He had a successful UFC debut with a first-round TKO of Evan Tanner, then went on to shine at the very first Ultimate Fighter Finale, where he knocked out Ken Shamrock on Spike TV before claiming the UFC middleweight title in his next fight.

But if you hopped in a time machine and told the Rich Franklin of 1993 -- then a senior at William Henry Harrison High School in Ohio -- that this UFC stuff he was watching with his friends would eventually become his career, he probably would have laughed in your time-traveling face.

"I had no aspirations of becoming a pro fighter or anything like that," Franklin says now. "But I saw the first UFC and I was immediately hooked."

Sure, he did a little karate. He was even his sensei's star pupil, and he felt pretty good about it. But in Franklin's mind, that was as far as it went. He liked sports, and he also felt like he should know how to defend himself. That's why, when he saw the UFC for the first time in November of 1993, it was an eye-opener.

I was like really? They were going to put me against this big guy? He was at least 50 pounds heavier than me.
-- Rich Franklin
"I remember thinking, if I ever get into a fight on the street I'd better know how to fight on the ground, because clearly some people know a lot more about it than others. So I started doing jiu-jitsu."

Fortunately, there was a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu chapter in Cincinnati. As a college student studying to be a high school math teacher, Franklin began learning the finer points of the ground game. One thing led to another, and soon he added some kickboxing into his regimen. It was fun, and that was enough. At least for a little while. Then his friend, Josh Rafferty (later a contestant on the first season of The Ultimate Fighter, put a simple question to Franklin.

"He said to me, 'Look man, all you do is train, go to school, come home, and train some more. You train all day, so why don't you try one of these fights and see if the training you're doing is actually paying off?' That's why I took my first fight."

But this was still Ohio in 1998, so it's not as if there were major MMA events taking place every weekend. What few there were in the region weren't exactly advertised on TV, either. Franklin and his friends had to ask around, but eventually they heard a rumor that there were regular fights at a gym in Muncie, Indiana. Franklin and Rafferty made the drive and sat through the entire event, which ended with a 6'2", 260-pound self-described "Meat Truck" by the name of Kerry Schall putting a beating on some football player.

"I looked at Josh at the end of the night and said, 'You know what? I think I could do this. Let's give it a shot.' We saw a flyer as we were leaving for another show about three months later and we decided, okay, this is the one we'll train for."

The good news was that training for an unregulated amateur fight in a gym in Indiana in 1998 was that you did not need to worry about cutting weight. You also didn't need to worry about seeing a doctor or passing medicals. You simply called up the promoter and told him you wanted a fight, and then you called him up two weeks before the fight to reassure him that you weren't going to back out. Then you showed up on fight night and waited your turn.

The bad news, Franklin soon realized, is that you had no idea who you'd be fighting. This hit home as he was sitting in the audience watching the night's first few fights and talking with Schall, who he recognized from the previous event he'd attended.

"We introduced ourselves and Kerry said, 'Oh, you're the guy I was supposed to fight tonight, but I had to pull out because I'm sick,'" Franklin recalls. "I was like, really? They were going to put me against this big guy? He was at least 50 pounds heavier than me."

But before he had too much of a chance to dwell on the implications of this revelation, the announcer called his name and summoned him to the cage. As Schall would delight in telling people years later, after he and Franklin had become good friends, when Franklin heard his own name he simply stood up, pulled off his tearaway warm-up pants like a male stripper, and strolled into the cage, ready to fight.

So I just let it go, and the crowd -- all 200 of them or whatever it was -- went from screaming and yelling to completely speechless.
-- Rich Franklin
The other guy, as Franklin remembers it, was not quite as excited about the whole deal.

"He looked uneasy. As soon as we stepped in the cage, he looked like he didn't really want to be there. I looked at his demeanor and his posture and I was like, I got this one in the bag. He was in something that he did not want to be in."

As soon as the action started, Franklin realized why. His opponent that night -- Franklin swears he was known only by the name 'Seymour' ("I guess he was like Madonna or something. He just had the one name. He was Seymour.") -- didn't seem like he was quite ready for an amateur fight against a man who had five years of experience in both grappling and striking at a time when most fighters still specialized in one at the expense of the other.

But even though he quickly saw that his skills were ahead of Seymour's, Franklin wasn't totally sure what to do about it.

"This is how dumb I was: we come out and we're mixing it up, and I end up taking him down. I'm kind of cross-mounted on him and I have a submission, but I let it go and go to another submission, and I have a shoulder lock almost completely locked out, but then I thought, you know, I trained all these months, all these years, for a 30-second fight? I'm going to let him up. So I just let it go, and the crowd -- all 200 of them or whatever it was -- went from screaming and yelling to completely speechless."

Franklin released the submission and stood up. He indicated to Seymour that he, too, should get up. This seemed to confuse everyone -- especially Seymour -- and even Franklin soon had second thoughts.

"He got up and we mixed it up on our feet some more, but it was clear to me that I was just a step above this level of competition. At that point, I started to feel a little bad. Like, why didn't I just finish him when I knew I had him beat? This is kind of a jerk thing to do."

So Franklin handed out a tough dose of mercy in the form of a knee to the gut. Seymour collapsed on the mat. The ref stepped in and waved it off. A little over two minutes after it had started, his first MMA fight was over. After the way it had gone, he wasn't quite sure what to think about it.

"I thought it would just be that one fight. Then a couple months later somebody asked me about doing another one and I thought, why not?"

Part of his enthusiasm was just a consequence of being an ignorant youth, he says. "Early in my fight career, I really thought I was the baddest man on the planet. I was young and stupid."

I was like, whoa, you can actually make money fighting? That's where it first clicked.
-- Rich Franklin
But it was also the fact that, for one reason or another, the high school math teacher didn't fully appreciate the risks he was taking.

"It wasn't until my third amateur fight, where I kicked this guy in the jaw and broke his jaw in like three places -- hurt him pretty bad, actually -- that I finally took a step back and realized, hey, that could have been me. These are the consequences of fighting, and you never know who you're getting in the cage with. From that point on, you start thinking about it a little more. The reality of things starts weighing on you a little more."

Shortly thereafter the local promoter pulled Franklin aside and politely suggested he find a bigger organization to compete in, one with fighters who might give him more resistance. That's when a different promoter offered him a couple hundred dollars to fight in his event, and a light bulb went off in Franklin's head.

"I was like, whoa, you can actually make money fighting? That's where it first clicked."

Gradually the purses and the events got bigger, and in his fourth year of teaching Franklin decided to give up his full-time job at an Ohio high school in order to pursue fighting as a career.

"Before that I'd make a thousand bucks here or there and have a little extra money to buy Christmas gifts or something. But to do this and really make money at it? That was a pretty wild idea. The sport was only just then evolving to the point where people were starting to make real money at it," he says now. "That fourth year I took like three fights and I won and ended up quitting my job. Seems like it all panned out pretty well."

New coach validated by Sonnen's submission win, NSAC mum on licensing prospects

It was a proud moment for Scott McQuary when Chael Sonnen cinched an arm-triangle choke that forced Brian Stann to tap out.

McQuary, who joined forces with Sonnen three months prior as a jiu-jitsu and muay Thai coach, said the submission was one of a handful drilled into the fighter over the course of training camp.

"I saw it as an opportunity - because in all of Chael's fights previously, he was always in those positions," McQuary told MMAjunkie.com.

Frankie Edgar bloodies camera with celebration kiss at UFC 136

Frankie Edgar bloodies camera with celebration kiss at UFC 136

Frankie Edgar was understandably excited when he TKOed Gray Maynard to defend the UFC lightweight belt. To celebrate, the 5-foot-6 fighter jumped onto the six-foot fence of the Octagon, grabbed a camera and gave it a big kiss. As his face had been bloodied early when Maynard had Edgar on his heels in the first round, Edgar left a bloody mess behind him.

MMA has its own charms that makes it different from any other sport. One of them is that its fans can see the beauty behind blood drops on a camera.

TUF 12's Alex "Bruce Leroy" Caceres dropping to bantamweight, meets Cole Escovedo at UFC on Fox 1

Following his second straight submission loss in the Octagon, Alex "Bruce Leroy" Caceres is dropping to the bantamweight division for one last shot in the UFC. The organization announced on Wednesday that Caceres will take on Cole Escovedo on Nov. 12 on the UFC on Fox 1 card in Anaheim, Calif.

Caceres has dropped fights to Mackens Semerzier and Jim Hettes since entering the organization through the Ultimate Fighter's 12th season last fall. Escovedo has lost both of his appearances in the UFC as well, dropping a decision to Renan Barao before being finished by Takeya Mizugaki last month at UFC 135. The loser of this bout is likely to find themselves out of their respective UFC contract.

Cruz digs deep to retain his 135-pound title at UFC on Versus 6

Cruz digs deep to retain his 135-pound title at UFC on Versus 6For once, Dominick Cruz was the slower fighter. Fortunately for him, he was also the bigger and smarter one Saturday night at UFC on Versus 6.

The UFC's bantamweight champ was gasping for air early in the fight, but changed up his game plan, and used his size and wrestling to slow down the ultra-quick Demetrious Johnson. It earned Cruz a hard-fought unanimous decision, 50-45, 49-46 and 50-45, in the main event at the Verizon Center in Washington D.C.

Cruz (19-1, 2-0 UFC) has now won 10 straight fights and added to his reputation as a near-impossible riddle to solve. Previously, he'd built his game around a dynamic, dipping and darting striking attack, but tonight it was all about his grappling.

"It was tough. The kid's got a sick pace so I had to outwrestle him," Cruz told UFC analyst Joe Rogan. "He didn't surprise me, I was ready for a wicked grind, a wicked pace. I knew I just had to slow him down by using my strength and size."

Cruz scored 10 takedowns in 19 attempts. He also dropped Johnson with two beautiful whizzers, a judo-style takedown, and executed two nice suplexes.

Cruz got a wake-up call in the opening round. He tried to employ his confusing striking style, but couldn't catch the 5-foot-3 Johnson. "Mighty Mouse" was the slicker fighter. About four minutes into the fight, Cruz, normally a cardio machine, was breathing deep. It was time to stop Johnson's movement by putting his back on the mat.

"You gotta be able to switch everything up. You can't fight everybody the same. I wanted to show a little bit of my grappling in this fight," said Cruz.

The second round was also close, but in the third Cruz began to take over.

At 5-8, Cruz's size gave Johnson difficulties. With 3:33 left in the round, Cruz got standing control of Johnson's back and chucked him over his head. At this level of MMA, you don't often see a suplex that impressive.

Cruz digs deep to retain his 135-pound title at UFC on Versus 6Cruz's jiu-jitsu was on full display from there as he transitioned to take Johnson's back on the ground and flatten him out. Cruz locked on a rear-naked choke on two occasions, but Johnson's defense was excellent. He was in the predicaments for nearly 50 seconds, but survived both and escaped.

"I was looking for that finish, but he toughed it out. I had that choke in deep twice and he toughed it out. He was gurgling and he just toughed it, but that's what you do for title fights," Cruz said. "That's what happens when you're fighting the best in the world."

The undersized Johnson, 23, has nothing to be embarrassed about. Cruz made high-level fighters like Brian Bowles and Joe Benavidez look silly in three mega-fights. Johnson (9-2, 2-1 UFC) hung with him in every round and lost the strikes landed battle by one (Cruz 146-145). He was a just a little too small to defend Cruz's power takedowns.

The UFC plans on introducing a 125-pound flyweight division sometime in 2012. Look for Johnson to become an immediate challenger for that title right out of the gates.
