McGee decisions Yang at Ultimate Fight Night 25

McGee decisions Yang at Ultimate Fight Night 25

"The Ultimate Fighter" winner Court McGee notched a win after a long layoff from the Octagon, taking a decision over Dongi Yang at Ultimate Fight Night 25 in New Orleans on Saturday. The judges gave McGee the win 30-27, 29-28, 30-28.

McGee wobbled Yang in the first round, getting the better of Yang in the stand-up battle in a very close round that featured Yang stalking, but McGee striking. The second round showed a tired Yang slowing down, but still throwing big shots. As the round wore on, McGee was able to land more kicks and punches. Yang didn't have enough energy to defend the strikes.

The fight exploded in the third round, as Yang knocked McGee down halfway through the round. He followed up with a flying knee, but took some damage of his own as both fighters emerged with bloody faces. McGee defended a toss attempt by Yang, and then took Yang down and went straight into full mount. Yang's conditioning -- or lack thereof -- played a part, as McGee finished the round with an easy takedown into half-guard. McGee followed up with elbows, then moved into a guillotine choke. The round ended before McGee could finish the submission.

McGee hadn't fought since October of 2010 due to a knee injury. His record moves to 14-1, while Yang falls to 10-2.

Edwards, Peralta and Waldburger early winners at UFN 25

Edwards, Peralta and Waldburger early winners at UFN 25

Justin Edwards, Robert Peralta and T.J. Waldburger started off Ultimate Fight Night 25 with wins. Waldburger's submission was the most memorable of the early fights taking place in New Orleans on Saturday night.

Edwards ekes out decision

Jorge Lopez, a protege of Wanderlei Silva's started the fight with a big takedown, leaving him open for Edwards to squeeze in for a guillotine. Edwards could not hold on, and the fight returned to stand-up.

Edwards had an easy time taking down Lopez, but couldn't always hold on to his position. Edwards took Lopez's back near the end of the second and used that position to land several big hooks, but again, Lopez was able to reverse out of the position.

Lopez took over in the third round, taking Edwards down and smothering him with strikes. He also showed off great jiu-jitsu, but it was not enough. Edwards won by decision, 29-28 on all three cards.

Peralta wins with leg kicks

Robert Peralta, making his UFC debut, won the first round with a takedown and several punishing leg kicks, the same move that Edson Barboza used to beat Mike Lullo in his last fight. Peralta was able to stuff Lullo's takedown attempts and turn it into clinch work in the second round. Lullo returned several of his kicks but they weren't as damaging as Peralta's.

Lullo improved as the fight went on, but still had trouble overcoming Peralta's kicks and takedown defense. Lullo finally got him down near the end of the third round. He took Peralta's back, but couldn't finish the fight. The judges called it 30-27, 30-27, 29-28 for Peralta.

Waldburger shows submission magic

T.J. Waldburger started the fight with fireworks, throwing a flying knee, then following Stumpf to the ground to damage him with strikes, then work him with jiu-jitsu. Stumpf, who took the fight on short notice, was able to get out and meet Waldburger with his own knee, but then Waldburger was able to get another takedown. From there, he put on a jiu-jitsu clinic, starting with an armbar before transitioning into a triangle choke. Stumpf tapped at 3:52.

Baczynski, Stone and Boist winners at UFN 25

Baczynski, Stone and Boist winners at UFN 25

At Ultimate Fight Night 25 in New Orleans on Saturday, the preliminary fights featured two submissions and a decision.

Baczynski makes his way back to UFC with submission

Seth Baczynski, who hasn't fought in the UFC since his stint on "The Ultimate Fighter," used impressive striking to control Harvison in the first round, but that striking is what set up his submission win in the second round. Baczynski knocked Harvison to the ground with a beautiful right, then followed him to the ground with more big punches. Harvison rolled to get away from the punches, but gave up his back. Baczynski sunk in a rear naked choke, causing Harvison to tap at 1:12 of the first.

Stone puts Walker to sleep

Ken Stone won with a perfect rear naked choke, sinking it in early, then holding onto Donny Walker until Walker was asleep. The fight was stopped at 2:47 in the first round. That gives Stone his first UFC win, after suffering scary wins to Eddie Wineland and Scott Jorgensen.

Boist takes bloody decision from Riddle
Boist controlled Riddle with good striking followed by smothering grappling in the first round. In the second, Riddle threw a devastating knee that damaged Benoist's nose. Riddle was also able to get a takedown, but Benoist got out and then got a takedown of his own. Benoist's bigger problem was that his nose was apparently broken, then he made the mistake of blowing his nose. Blood poured out as Benoist continued to work from the top position.

Before the third round started, Riddle, covered in Benoist's blood, danced around to get the crowd cheering. He immediately took down Benoist, and controlled him for the rest of the round. That last round was not enough for Riddle, as he won on the judges' cards, 29-28.

"Mayhem" Miller promises must-see TV on "TUF 14" but says coaching was top priority

If you're familiar with the MMA career of Jason "Mayhem" Miller, it's probably not necessary to explain he's a rambunctious, high-energy personality capable of capturing an audience from the first moment he peeks his head out from backstage.

And if your familiar with his stint on MTV's "Bully Beatdown," it's probably not necessary to explain he's a rambunctious, high-energy personality capable of capturing an audience from the first moment he hits the small screen.

But Miller insists his first priority as a coach on the soon-to-debut 14th season of "The Ultimate Fighter" wasn't being the star of the show.

QUOTABLES: WWE's Triple H says UFC needs to evolve, WWE doesn't

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Triple_H_art_180.jpg
"I don't think we have to evolve. It's two totally different things. I think now especially there's this thing like, 'oh it's very similar.'

I don't see us needing to evolve to what UFC does because quite frankly sometimes the fights are long and boring, guys lying around and sometimes the fights are fast and over in five seconds. I've always thought one of the things about us, if you look at us solely from a sports standpoint, is that we always give you a good show. We're never going to give you a crap game.

I think if anybody needs to evolve, it's them. Give more of an entertainment standpoint. Give more form; they just have fighters who walk in in T-shirts and shorts and just stand there and then they fight and then they win and then they go 'thanks, I'd like to thank my sponsors' and then they leave. The whole world was up in arms when Brock was flipping people off and was cussing at the beer company because they didn't give him any money and everyone thought, 'oh my god, he's disrespectful,' -- the whole world was talking about it. They couldn't wait to see him get beat up. And then he did well, and he beat some guys and then people jump on his bandwagon going 'Brock's the greatest.' I'm good friends with Floyd Mayweather and Floyd would be the first to tell ya, 'I make the most money in boxing and I have the biggest buyers because I have the biggest mouth.' He'd be the first guy to tell you that. That's what it's about. Sports is entertainment."

-The WWE's Triple H talks to Ariel Helwani at MMAFighting.com about the WWE and UFC's evolutionary needs.

Penick's Analysis: This might be one of the more patently ridiculous things Triple H has ever said, and that's saying something. While all sports are inherently about entertainment for fans, there is a reason the UFC and MMA is a sporting event over an entertainment product and that's because it's a real competition. Yes that means there are occasionally boring fights and fights that end quickly, but to suggest that every wrestling match the WWE puts on is a "good show" is laughable. Professional wrestling has seen a decline over the years in viewership in many ways because of an at times less than entertaining product. There are things that could be improved in promoting fights and in getting more interest in some fighters in the UFC, but the sport itself is inherently entertaining, and as it gathers more fans and branches out onto Fox it's going to have it's own natural evolution. The lack of evolution in pro wrestling and the continued attempt at reviving the massive popularity boom of the mid 90s has seen it stagnate, and some of that is likely attributable to this type of attitude from those at the top.
